Fussy Galore

January 13, 2011

There is an old Yiddish saying, “Mentsch tracht, Gott lacht.”
The translation is, “Man plans, God laughs.”

And it’s not that God is just putzing around having a grand old time up in heaven, living it up and laughing while we are busy preparing for the future. Rather it is that God laughs when we plan for an unknowable future.  After all, much about the future is beyond our control.

That is just one reason why I don’t write about things that are going to happen.  But today, I’m going to make a rare exception because I got some exciting news.  And it has something to do with the big changes that are going on at All Over Albany.

I am gearing up to write a regular food feature for the site.

Actually, I will be taking over a past feature that has been on an extended hiatus.  It’s called Eat This! and I am both honored and absolutely thrilled.  If you click on the link it will open up an archive of posts on some of the tastiest things to eat and drink in the region.

The plan is that the feature will run on Tuesdays and I will start out writing them every other week.  If I can make the space in my schedule I would love to have this be a weekly dose of Fussy on All Over Albany.  But I want to start off slow.  It’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver.

I can’t even say when the first Eat This! will run.

But right now I’m making a list of things I want to write about, which I will send to the AOA editors on Friday.  If you are a regular reader, my favorite things to eat in the region should not be terribly surprising.  What I’m actually finding surprising is the length of that list.

In some ways I really feel like I’ve turned a corner from when I started this blog a little over a year and a half ago.  Now I’m not spending as much time lamenting the things I left behind out West.  Nor am I as focused on the failures of local restaurants to achieve a higher standard.  Rather, I am enjoying the special things I have found in the region.  The AOA folks seemed to notice this too, and soon I’ll get the opportunity to share these treats with their readers

What fun.

I’ll keep you posted.  We’ll see what AOA thinks of my list we review it in the days to come.  But right now it already has enough to keep me busy for over a year.  Obviously it will need to be flexible, because sometimes serendipity drops a new and interesting restaurant in town that promises to knock your socks off.  See what I mean about plans?

Awesome! I look forward to your insights. When I moved here 7 years ago, it seemed to me that Albany was nothing but chain restaurants and crappy “Italian” places. I could use some guidance on how to find the hidden gems.

    Fabulous — congratulations, good sir!

I look forward to reading AOA as I always do and suddenly be struck by “you know, this sounds suspiciously like Prof. Fussy.” It’s like a little treasure for me, having always been a “go back to check the byline after reading the entire article” sort of reader.
