Two Chances to Celebrate The Blogiversary

April 26, 2012

Do you know what Mrs. Fussy and I do every year on our anniversary? Usually nothing. Well, that’s not entirely true. Every year we tell each other how glad we are not be having a wedding today.

Our wedding was great. It was a bright and sunny day surrounded by our closest friends and loved ones, with tasty food, good cheese, well-paired wines, and lots and lots of joy. But planning an event like that is often stressful, and it’s a unique challenge to enjoy the company of so many people in such a short window of time.

And to commemorate this most momentous occasion, we do nothing. No gifts. No festive meals. No cards. Nada. Sometimes we lose track of how long we’ve been together. In part because we’re joined until death. That was the deal. So achieving two years or twenty-two years isn’t a goal, it’s an expectation.

I think one year I bought us an anniversary bottle of single malt scotch.

With this background, perhaps it makes more sense as to why I was going to let the anniversary of the FUSSYlittleBLOG just pass by with a simple post on May 1 that acknowledged the day. However, I was cajoled by DerryX into doing something. So, this is my new plan.

Let me first say, this is a terrible idea.

Today, I’m backing out of all my social commitments because of my head cold, cough and tricky back. Three relatively minor conditions that have been vexing me for weeks. But by Tuesday, I’m irrationally optimistic that I’ll be fine.

Also, despite what Jerry said, I can’t imagine anybody is going to be up for my kind of party. Don’t forget, I’m an old man, and my idea of a party is to sit down in a curmudgeonly setting and talk about food for hours on end. So if that appeals to you, you are welcome to join me.

I’ve got two such places picked out: one for the morning, and the other for night.

At 9:30 a.m. on May 1 you will find me at Dewey’s Diner at 51 Fuller Road. If I’m the only one there, I’ll likely be reading a book about bialys. And I fully expect to be the only one there. My hope is that it’s not too deep into spring to get a bowl of oatmeal. If it is, I’ll bite the bullet and finally try one of their egg and cheese sandwiches. Diet be damned.

If my back isn’t cooperating, I’ll be on a stool. Otherwise, I’ll get comfy in one of their not-so-comfy booths.

Feel free to drop by even for a cup of coffee if you like or a side of their sometimes-amazing hash browns. But please do let me know if you plan to come. In the off chance a lot of you decide to play hooky from your jobs or other daytime responsibilities, I’d like to let the ladies at Dewey’s know they will be descended upon. They don’t seem like the type that does well with surprises.

And in the off chance that something goes wrong, like Dewey’s is inexplicably closed, check my Twitter feed for live updates. It’s been known to happen.

The morning activities end at around 11 a.m. when I will be picking up stakes to get to my next commitment (to which you are not invited, sorry).

My thought is that more people would be available in the evening. My old man evening plan is quite similar to my old man morning plan. Sit down with folks, eat, drink, and yammer on about food. But instead of oat meal, it’s oat soda.

This will be at one of two places that for all intents and purposes are next door to each other, and will be weather dependent. If the evening promises to be nice, and not too cold, I’ll be out on the back deck at Sutter’s Mill & Mining. Now I know you are saying the food is nasty there. Well, the fries are just fine. And the beer is cold. If we go there, we’re going for the deck, because I love decks.

Should the winds be blowing cold, well, fried foods would cool down too quick to be enjoyed. Then I’ll mosey on down to Across the Street Pub just a block or so away. It’s nothing fancy. But I do like their wings. I’m not saying they are the best, but once upon a time, they even used to have a special on them Tuesday nights. It’s possible they still do.

Again, keep your eyes on the Twitter feed as to where I’ll be. As we get closer, and the forecast gets more accurate, I’ll try to give you a better sense.

The evening plan starts at 7 p.m. and I’ll commit to sticking around until at least 9 p.m., quite possibly with the same bialy book from the morning. Please do let me know if you will actually be dropping by. I understand a lot of people like to say something like, “I’ll do my best to be there” but that’s not terribly helpful in trying to get a grasp of the turnout. Please think about it, and let me know if you will make it. I’m sure many of you would like to come, but Tuesday nights in Guilderland aren’t convenient for anyone. So I won’t be hurt if you can’t come. But if there turn out to be a lot of us, I’m sure the establishment would appreciate a heads-up.

Honestly, I have no idea what to expect here. I may just be hanging out by myself with my beer, my fries, and my bialy book, which would be cool. Or we may take over the place, which would be a bit more festive.

Since I write alone, it makes some amount of sense to celebrate alone. At least as much as it makes any sense to celebrate at all. I mean, I don’t celebrate the anniversary of my wedding. I find it hard to believe I’m celebrating three years of writing rants on food.

But so it is.

I love Rare Vos, so I will be at the deck party. Also, Guilderland is actually way better for me than Albany! Fingers crossed that the weather cooperates.

On the morning of May 1 I will be driving to BOS, but it may be easy enough to swing by Dewey’s on the way. Especially because I can swing by the Deli Warehouse and pick up some pickled pigs lips for the plane.

We find it’s fun to celebrate in a low-key way as well. I’m sure Nick wouldn’t mind discussing his trials w/ bialys with you sometime! Happy Bloggaversary and thanks for all you do to invigorate the local-foods discussion (and all you have done for us!).

You are going to scandalize McKownville with your band of raucous blog-people. That is my home hamlet, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.

It is pretty funny that you go to Sutter’s and The Across the Street Pub. I have a long history with both places. They are decidedly unfussy establishments.

Actually, I should note that McKownville is only the hamlet of my middling years. I am Albany born and currently dwell in the strange land known as “Delmar.”

Since I was the catalyst for plans to even come together, I must go! I’ll drop by Sutters after work and hang out with whoever comes.

Last minute change of plans; add two to your estimate for the evening event. Looking forward to congratulating you (and grabbing some wings)!

It’s on the edge. I was hoping for warmer weather. And for the deck not to be soaked with rain. So I’m calling this in favor of Across The Street. Plus their website does indicate tonight is indeed wing night.

If you are coming, that’s the spot. I’ll be there until at least 9p.

ANOTHER LAST MINUTE CHANGE OF PLANS. I’M ON THE DECK AT SUTTER’S! BETTER BEER, QUIETER CROWD, AND DRY DECK RULE THE DAY!

Wings aren’t exactly on my diet anyway.
