The Circle Game
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
– Joni Mitchell
This is an appropriate sentiment given my current situation. Here I am, back in California. I’m visiting ADS who I have been best friends with for over thirty years. And I’m feeling old.
Recently Sundays have been about press releases. They aren’t exactly about new content anymore, but I still post things that I hope will be interesting to you. So with that in mind, and given my current mood, I’m going to take a rare look back at the FLB.
And what gives me a little hope, is that by taking looking back, I’ve got something to look forward to in the future.
One major challenge of this blog is that I’m approaching 1,000 posts. That’s a lot of content, and some of it gets lost over time.
Three years ago today, was when I first posted Raf’s Cuban black bean recipe. He learned it from his Cuban-born step-grandmother. This story isn’t lost though. I reference it periodically, and even included it in a piece for All Over Albany about cooking out the winter.
Now Raf has two kids of his own, who I’ll be joining for dim sum later today.
Two years ago, I wrote about a member of my immediate family, my father. Because he had a tragic story that involved food from a long long time ago. Where does the time go.
Last year at this time, I posted a story about the World Barista Championships! Was that already a year ago? Oh no! Does that mean I missed it this year? Could I have been missing out?
Thankfully, no. This year, the World Barista Championship is June 12-15. It starts just after I get back home, which makes me really excited. This year, the United States is putting up Katie Carguilo of Counter Culture Coffee in New York.
And it’s good to have something to look forward to when I get back. But this summer promises to be full of adventure. We’ll talk more about that later. In the meantime, this upcoming week is going to be huge, and I’ve got a lot of ground to cover.
Tomorrow look forward to an illuminating interview about the Hannaford seafood sustainability policy.

Two baristas from my neighborhood roaster came in 3rd and 5th in the US Barista Championship!
I love that song. :)
