The Bestestes – Glossy Mag Edition

February 13, 2013

Raf told me once that the Recommendations tab on the top of my blog was really lame. What I need, he said, is something that tells people where to go.

“But that’s what Yelp’s does,” I responded.

Not everybody uses Yelp, For that matter, not everyone looks at the Reader’s Choice polls from the major newspaper in the area either. But the issue of polls comes up every year around this time as a heap of local media outlets decide to compile their list of the best of the best.

Honestly, I’m not sure what I’m doing about the FUSSYlittleBALLOT this year. Last year the changes the Times Union made to the questionnaire really went a long way in righting the ship. Now all we need to do is get them to separate out some of the ethnic restaurants so all of the cuisines of Asia aren’t in competition with Yono’s locally beloved Indonesian cuisine.

Part of me kind of wants to just let it go. Let me stew on it a little bit longer. Today, I have something different along similar lines.

Have you taken the latest poll from Capital Region Living magazine? I’m not going to push the issue or keep on reminding you to email your friends, or annoy them on facebook. But there is a section all the way on the bottom for Best Blogger.

However, I’m mostly concerned about the food questions. And there are a lot of them. Your answers to these questions may vary. But I thought it would be fun to share my own. If you wanted to use this as a launching off point for your own ballot, please be my guest. If you want to support my selections, thank you very kindly.

There were some categories that were slam dunks. Those are highlighted below in bold. Others I had no idea, so I simply submitted a question mark. In those categories where I feel our available options aren’t worthy of note, I answered, “none.” I understand that some people really like Van’s. I’m not one of them.

Hopefully this proves to be at least moderately entertaining. Maybe for some it will reveal great dining choices that have been off your radar. And if there are any restaurants you would like to learn more about, I would suggest you check them out on Yelp.

Sad to say, I actually have a favorite mac & cheese. Selena’s in troy makes a buffalo chicken mac & cheese that ruins any plans I had of eating only a salad for lunch.

Thanks, but I think one annual (mostly irrelevant) “Best Of” poll is sufficient, hence I won’t be filling this one out. Frankly, I’ve never seen an actual copy of Capital Region Living Magazine – is it merely a promotional flyer for the local chambers of commerce?

Best appetizers is a toughie — not sure I’ve had one that stood out as way better than the others.

    “But that’s what Yelp’s does,” I responded.

YES! I wish these polls had “best verbal regionalism” so I could nominate the addition of the apostrophe-S. “Yelp’s”! Does the bus still say “Walmart’s”? Perhaps this was a typo, but it warmed my heart.

re: the poll, I get Mrs. London’s and I get Crisan, but have you never been to Cheesecake Machismo, or what? I don’t miss much about Capitaland but the apostrophe-S and those cakes.

I see someone already recommended a Lebanese place, but I liked Beirut in Troy (only been there once though). And I second the shout-out for Cheesecake Machismo. Are you not a cheesecake person, Daniel?

Glad you came around and are promoting Dante’s!!

So, funny enough, I was just going to email you to ask if you were planning to mention the Troy Record Poll. I thought that this poll might be more up your alley than the Times Union Poll. From their description:

“Our annual Reader’s Choice contest celebrates the best of our community’s LOCALLY OWNED businesses. Although we appreciate the impact the national chains have on our economy. It is our locally owned businesses that make Troy and the surrounding communities truely unique …

…DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF THIS BALLOT IS FEBRUARY 15, 2013

ONLY LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESS ARE ELIGIBLE for these awards (with exceptions as noted on the ballot). Please keep this in mind as you nominate your “Best of the Best”
All nominees must be within 30 miles of Troy…”

I’m going to put my food-related choices for the poll here, just in case you decide not to mention it. I tried to come up with very Troy-centric choices, as I see this as an opportunity to influence Record readers (i put asterisks for when I could not think of a good Troy-based choice). Still, many of these businesses are ones that I know you support, so maybe you would mention this poll and encourage people to vote tomorrow…

Sorry, but I just don’t get the whole Jumpin’ Jack’s hoopla. The food is average at best, and overpriced. The Scotia park area and the river is nice, but not nice enough to warrant eating JJ’s food, especially when there are so many better places to get a burger.
