The “I’m Back What Did I Miss” Party

July 15, 2014

I’m beginning to see the light. This calls for a song.

It also calls for a get together. You can call it a meet-up, or maybe a social if you prefer. But whatever word you use, I’d love to try and get a few of you out of your homes and away from your screens for a few minutes next week to join me in enjoying something cold and sweet.

Sure, I still have stuff in boxes. But progress is being made. Things are being put away. Meals are being cooked in the kitchen. Bills are being paid. Broken things are being fixed or replaced. But there is a lot of food stuff to catch up on from my sabbatical.

For example, I missed three tours. The last cider donut tour happened without me. I was absent for the Troy edition of the Tour de Buffalo wing. And I had to read about the Tour de FroYo from New Jersey.

Turns out that I wasn’t the only one who read about the Tour de FroYo. One of the more promising runner-ups reached out and wanted to do a little something special for readers of the FLB. So, here is what we’re going to do.

16 Handles offered us the use of their Glenmont party room.

In the last tour, a few brave FLB readers stopped into the original location in Clifton Park, and the layout of the place and available seating were a significant issue. The yogurt sounded great, and Chantelle who had been fastidiously analysing the mochi topping at every stop gave extra points to 16 Handles for their “soft + perfect” version of the form.

Well, apparently the Glenmont location is a lot different in terms of the space. Plus it has a semi-private area where we can sit around in comfort, catch up on all kinds of food chit chat, and eat some after dinner FroYo (rain or shine).

To sweeten the pot, everyone who comes for the FLB event will get 15% off. As far as I’m concerned, that translates into loading up my FroYo cup with extra mochi. I’m told that on Monday, July 21 there will be Tahitian Vanilla on tap, which is one of their more natural “artisan” flavors and one that scored particularly well in the tour. And thankfully, Euro Tart is a constant fixture. It always drives me crazy when FroYo shops don’t bring their tart to the yard.

So here are the pertinents:
Where: 16 Handles Glenmont – 380 Route 9W, Glenmont, NY 12077
Date: Monday, July 21
Time: 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Cost: 85% of the regular price of whatever you eat (aka 15% off)

I have no idea how many people are going to show up. If you are a long time commenter on the blog, I’d love to see you. If you went on the Tour de FroYo, I’d be eager to hear how Glenmont stacks up. If you are a lurker, this would be a great chance to come out of the shadows. If you have kids, bring them. If you have pets, they should probably stay at home. If you don’t want to eat anything, come anyway. If it’s past your bedtime, treat yourself and stay up late. If you are concerned you won’t know anyone, and can’t think of anything to talk about, food is always a good topic.

Also, if you kinda think I’m a jerk, you should totally come. We can debate the merits of your position face-to-face.

Stay for as little or as long as you like. Eventually, they’ll kick us out. But fear not, if this event works out, we’ll try and do something like it again in the future.

Anyhow, I’m looking forward to hearing about all your adventures in the Capital Region while I’ve been away and your thoughts about the changing food scene. I have some plans that I’m formulating for the next tour and other events in the near future to tell you about. We can talk about how New Jersey is unfairly maligned, or why perhaps I may have a rosier view of life in the Garden State than most.

But most importantly, I’m looking forward to getting out of the house and back into the thick of things. Monday, July 21 marks three weeks since my return. And even though I haven’t been doing a great job of staying put, I can’t unpack forever.

Now clear your schedule for FroYo Monday. So, who is in?

I’m more of a ‘lurker’, but if I can swing it, Daniel, I’ll be there. Sounds like lots of fun.
