Funday: A Nudge for the Neophyte

November 21, 2014

Sometimes all it takes is just a gentle push. Othertimes it takes a bit of hand holding. Everyone’s path into cooking is different. I got tired of washing dishes, so I decided to start contributing to meals by making dessert.

These days, I believe in cooking. I think more people should do it. Yes, it can seem like a burden. But it doesn’t have to be.

One of the very first posts on the FLB was entitled Make Your Own Damn Sauce. I still believe that homemade pasta sauce is the gateway drug of home cooking. And that is one of the big reasons why I’m excited to be hosting this Sell Out Funday giveaway provided by Tuttorosso.

Here’s what the PR rep had to say on behalf of the brand:

Tuttorosso Tomatoes, the cherished 85-year-old tomato brand that’s family-owned and family-run, recently launched a new website (www.tuttorossotomatoes.com) with recipes, an inspirational ideas blog and even stories from home cooks. As part of that, they are introducing a line-up of Sunday Sauce recipes to inspire cooks in every kitchen. They’re calling it, “Celebrate the Sauce.”

As it turns out, I actually buy Tuttorosso tomatoes. They became my prefered brand after Cooks Illustrated did a tasting of crushed tomatoes back in 2007, and Tuttorosso came out on top. Here’s what the magazine had to say about the Tuttorosso crushed tomatoes in thick puree with basil:

Tasters declared Tuttorosso “chunky, with dimensional flavor and bright tomato taste”; “I’d use this.” In the sauce, we liked its “deep roasted tomato flavor.” In sauce, tasters found “good, meaty tomato flavor,” with a texture “similar to a paste.”

Tuttorosso is in promotion mode right now. On its facebook page the brand is giving away 1,000 aprons per week, having a daily drawing for 1 heirloom wooden spoon, and is offering a grand prize of a Martha Stewart Cookware set. Feel free to go there and enter.

But I do think your odds might be better here.

I’ve got one Tuttorosso kit to give away. It contains a 28-oz can of crushed tomatoes with basil, a 28-oz. can peeled of Italian style plum tomatoes, a 28-oz can of tomato sauce and a 6-oz can of tomato paste, a Tuttorosso apron, a Tuttorosso wooden spoon and recipes. For the sake of full disclosure, they are going to send me a kit as well.

My hope is to see this package go to someone who doesn’t do a lot of from-scratch cooking; someone who could use just a little nudge to get them into the kitchen. It’s hard to come up with an excuse to not make your own damn sauce when you get a can of crushed tomatoes, a wood spoon, and an apron delivered to your door.

It’s like the universe really wants you to make the sauce.

If this sounds like you, simply write in the comments below, “I could use a nudge.” That’s it. And you’re entered to win. One winner will be selected at random after comments close Sunday, November 30 at 11:59 pm.

Good luck. And have a great weekend.

OHMYGOSH! Yes. Make ya own damn sauce. It’s so easy. I just recently showed someone how to do this, now, they’re say how did I ever eat that crap. In the (amazing) Locatelli cookbook he talks about how a quick sauce is the Italian fast food. So true.

By the way, I prefer Cento canned tomatoes. :-p

I’ve actually been using the Beekman Boys Mortgage Lifter pasta sauce. It has such a fresh taste to it. I honestly don’t think I could make it taste any fresher if I made it myself.

I could use a nudge. My wife makes her own sauce. And I would never take that away from her. Maybe if I won a bunch of sauce ingredients I could make a batch of my own without hurting feelings. (In full disclosure I love my wife’s sauce with meatballs but it isn’t the Sunday gravy I am looking for – Her “why in the world would you put pork ribs in spaghetti sauce?). I need an excuse to expand horizons….
