Funday: Gone Farmin’

September 18, 2015

Tomorrow is another big Yelp Event. Farmer Gordon of 9 Miles East is hosting a Yelp Elite Event. In the past, the Official Yelp Events have been open to everyone. Now that the community is growing, there will be more of these private events for those who have gone the extra mile and earned their Elite status.

Part of my not-so-new job is to try and help those who want the rank, earn the badge.

I’m only mentioning this because this week with the Yelp stuff and the Jewish High Holy Days, I’ve been crazy busy. And for some reason, the press release machine feels like it’s working overtime. So not only do I have plenty of things to share, I’ve got more reason than ever to do it.

Next week is another crazy week too, and that ends on Saturday with the Sixth Annual Tour de Cider Donut. Hopefully you were already saving the date, because it’s September 26. Final details will be announced Monday.

You’ve gotta be at least a little curious about what the public relations community thought you would be interested in learning about this week. Even if you’re not, here it is.

DOG SHOW & YAPPY HOUR AT LUCAS CONFECTIONERY
Best In Show Fun To Benefit Joseph’s House & Shelter

TROY, N.Y. (9/17/15) — A Troy wine bar will host a special dog show for charity this Sunday, Sept. 20 during a canine-friendly cocktail party.

Adding more fun to the popular Lucas Confectionery “Yappy Hour,” the dog show will raise funds for Joseph’s House and Shelter, Inc., a Troy-based not for profit that serves to prevent and alleviate homelessness.

“I wanted to do something fun to raise awareness for Joseph’s House and reach an audience we don’t normally reach,” said Patti Tullgren, director of development for Joseph’s House and Shelter. “If people enjoy themselves as they get to know more about who we are, then they’ll be able to relate to us later when they see our name out there doing the work we do.”

The dog show, complete with a master of ceremonies, will start at 6 p.m. and should last approximately 20 minutes depending on how many contestants take part.

Competition categories include: Best Hairdo; Best Name; Best Costume; Best Trick and Best Personality. Winners will receive a prize ribbon and toy or treat.

Registration costs $20 per category and voting ballots cost $5, with all proceeds benefiting Joseph’s House.

To pre-register online, visit: http://www.josephshousetroy.org

Walk-in registration at Lucas Confectionery will be from 4 p.m. till 5:30 p.m.

Located at 12 Second St. in Downtown Troy, Lucas Confectionery has a retractable glass roof over its rear garden patio, where the dog show will take place, so this is a rain or shine event.

Yappy Hour starts at 4 p.m. and continues until 8 p.m. Dog owners and their sociable furry pals can enter the garden patio through the Franklin Street Alley entrance (off Broadway).

Celebrated Times Union reporter Paul Grondahl will attend to sell and sign copies of his “Great Dogs of Albany and Beyond” book.

The dog show is sponsored by Lucas Confectionery and Henry Loves Betty, a pet boutique located at 195 River St in Troy offering high-quality and organic toys, treats, apparel, accessories, food and gifts for pets and pet-lovers!

“We love to give dogs a place to socialize during Yappy Hour,” said Jillian Multari, director of events at Lucas Confectionery. “Now our four-legged friends have a chance to help their two-legged friends in need.”

Multari says this Sunday’s event will be closer in spirit to Christopher Guest’s 2000 mockumentary “Best In Show” than to the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

UNIQUE “HABITATCENTRIC” PLANNED FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF SCHENECTADY COUNTY’S WOMEN BUILD-A-BASH EVENT
MEDIA CONTACT: Karen McLane, Community Relations Manager 404-408-0679

SCHENECTADY, NY —- When was your last Hammerschlagen contest? Does the thought of responding to an auctioneers call to hoist a well-known local building contractor and a female GE engineer to the ceiling of a three story building make you curious? Patrons will sample these and other “Habitat-centric” activities at the “Women Build-A-Bash” from 5-8PM on Saturday, September 19 at the Schenectady Armory located at 125 Washington Avenue across from the Schenectady County Community College. The event will showcase the historic Armory landmark, recently purchased and refurbished by partners Jeff and Ray Legere of Legere Restorations, as it helps raise money for Habitat’s Women Build program, which brings females together to practice basic construction skills as they build homes for families currently living in sub-standard or inadequate housing. The event will celebrate and honor long time Habitat volunteer, Virginia Newton. Virginia joined the first Women Build project here in 2004 and has been a valued part of the construction team and building committee ever since.

The fundraiser will feature a variety of cuisine from local eateries set out in a street scape pattern with food court and casual seating (on furniture from Habitat’s ReStore which can be purchased that evening), a cash bar, live music by Goin’ Back, and a number of unique games and attractions that highlight Habitat’s mission. The previously mentioned Habitat Hammerschlagen contest involves nails, hammers and a tree trunk. The Raise the Roof competition pits Schenectady Armory co-owner Ray Legere against GE R&D’s Hope Matis, a member of the GE Women’s Network and frequent Women Build volunteer. Both challengers will be swinging from “boatswain’s” chairs as they strive, driven by patron auction responses, to where they can reach the Armory’s 50 foot high ceiling. A live auction to win a child’s playhouse built by Habitat volunteers and other fundraising activities are on tap during the evening.

Habitat for Humanity utilizes primarily volunteer labor to rehab and build new construction homes for working class families needing a hand up, not a hand out. Partnering with Habitat, families currently living in sub-standard or inadequate housing can apply to become first time homebuyers with the Habitat program. Applicants must show the ability to pay a mortgage, maintain an adequate credit rating and agree to put in 400 hours of sweat equity into their new home.

Campaign sponsors include Key Bank and Travelers Insurance. Event sponsors include Bayly’s Rentals, Jeff & Ursula Legere, Ray & Renee Legere, Town Square Media, Turner Construction, CDTA, Vantage Management, DeVoe Associates, Printz & Patternz, Trustco Bank, and TVI. .

A wide variety of food and beverages will be provided by Angelo’s Tavolo ,Canvas, Corks & Forks, Casa Visco, Cuff’s Cakes, Ferrari’s Ristorante, , Mike’s Hot Dogs, Morrette’s, Price Chopper, Mazzone Hospitality, Tesoros Café, Villa Italia, Union Café & Zen.

Tickets are $65 in advance; $75 at the door. They are available through Schenectady Habitat’s web site at http://www.schenectadyhabitat.org/ and clicking on events or by mailing a check to Karen McLane at 115 N. Broadway, Schenectady, NY 12305. Further information is available by contacting Karen McLane at 518-395-3412 Ext. 103 / kmclane@schenectadyhabitat.org.
