A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Happy International Women’s Day!
On January 21 I joined the Women’s March in Albany, and it was a powerful force. I’m one of those rare men who has pretty much always worked for women. I was working in San Francisco, so I had a smattering of gay male bosses too. But I’ve worked for precious few straight white men. So I suppose that makes me an outlier of sorts.
Honestly, I’m not sure where my deep respect of women comes from. But I’ve long felt more comfortable hanging out with a group of women talking about cooking and children than I have in a group of men talking about sports and work.
And none of it threatens my masculinity. Not one little bit.
I do wish this was the case for more people of my gender.
Just recently I saw some of Young Master Fussy’s friends referring to girls as bitches in an online chatroom. And honestly, it breaks my heart. These boys are kids. Kids. Most likely they are getting it from TV, or music, or the Internet. But I’m wondering if these children have anyone around who is going to sit them down and explain how wrong it is to stereotype and dehumanize their classmates with words.
That’s not to say that I am perfect either, but I try to be my best. Which brings us back to today.
Today Shmaltz Brewing Company in Clifton Park, commemorates the 100th Anniversary for women’s suffrage in New York State with a new Double IPA recipe for SHE’BREW Beer®. There will even be a special happy hour today at 4pm in the brewery where you can sample this batch from the fermenter.
That’s wild. You should also know that Shmaltz will be donating portions of SHE’BREW Beer® sales to Planned Parenthood and the Pink Boots Society scholarship fund.
The other thing that’s being revealed at Shmaltz today is the new label for SHE’BREW which features some of the amazing women in our community, like Planned Parenthood’s Director of Communications Emma Corbett and Public Affairs Director Beth LeGere, Jacki Hannon and Laura Burghdurg from Eagle Beverage, Stephanie Martini from Mohawk Taproom, Heidi Knoblauch from The Plumb Bar, Brooke Taney from Slidin’ Dirty, Janis Benincasa from SUNY New Paltz Benjamin Center, Stacy Manna from Saratoga Eagle, Patti Wilcox from Awestruck Cider, and Rachel Mabb from The Ruck in Troy.
Those assembled for the picture include not just these great women, but also some of the men who think they rock. Jeremy Cowan is there dressed up as Uncle Sam, and if you look closely enough, you might find the Profussor.
For people who can’t make it to the brewery today, and who can’t wait for the bottle release in April, I’ll include the image below.
To make today’s post a bit more engaging, let’s play a game. I’m going to call it, Find the Profussor! Tell me in the comments section below where you think I am in the picture. Random.org will select a winner from the correct entries, will that person will get a bottle of this beer when it’s released. Naturally, that means you have to be 21 or over to win.
Have a great International Women’s Day. If you are marching, be safe out there.
In the back, ijust the right of the expect resistance sign. Are you taking a selfie?
I’ll second Jon in Albany on that placement to the right of the resistance sign. This is an easy one because there aren’t that many men in the photo and most have hair.
Last year’s She’Brew was excellent, and I’m sure this one will be too. Well worth winning, tasting or paying for.
Jon with the eagle eyes has nailed it, I think. Are you wearing a fedora, or is that a trick of the eyes?
Uncle Sam.
Good Eye, Jon!
There you are – to the left of the Votes for Women sign, exactly as it should be! I was there in spirit, for sure!
What did you say to your son when you discovered the “bitches” chat?
Congrats to Bob W.
Random.org picked his number, so it looks like I owe him a beer. Please reach out to me at the blog’s email address and we’ll find a way to get you your prize. Details for how to do that can be found in the “Contact the FLB” tab, underneath the masthead at the top of the page.
