Speaking of Bingeing

August 24, 2018

Tomorrow is the Tour de Soft Serve! Despite it looking like a perfect day to traipse around Schenectady eating soft serve, right now this is looking like one of the most sparsely attended tours yet!

But that’s okay. Even if nobody showed up, I would still do them. These tours are about satisfying a deep curiosity, and having an excuse to visit some classic spots that I’ve always wanted to try.

Sometimes you’ve just got to throw caution to the wind, and eat something ridiculous.

Which just so happens to be a great segue into the subject at hand. Because yesterday on Twitter, I found something too hard to ignore. Maybe you happened to stumble upon it too. I’m talking about New York’s own pizza burrito. Or pizzarito as the kids are calling it.

Actually, I have no idea what kids are calling things these days. I think that makes me officially old. That, and I can’t stand the sound of modern music.

But this pizza burrito starts as a cheese pizza. After it’s cooked, it’s topped with meat, pasta, and a whole bunch more cheese before it’s cooked a second time. Then the whole pie gets rolled up, and tossed back into the oven a third time to finish. Finally it’s dusted with parmesan, sliced, and served.

At the end of the process, it can weigh up to seven pounds.

It looks like I might have one bite of that and be full for the day. But at Russo’s House of Pizza, they recommend if you’re going to try and take it down, to approach the task as a threesome.

That’s fair. And while it may be doable, it’s still probably not recommended by the American Heart Association.

What struck me, was that with a little further digging, I found out one of these monstrosities only costs about $15. And the place is a straight 2 hour shot down the New York State Thruway.

Road trip?

Maybe in winter. Or maybe we can find someone willing to do something as ridiculous up here. Or maybe not. Despite the assurances of the ladies in the video about how delicious the pizzarito actually is, I have my doubts.

That said, looking at all those images of melted cheese leaves me a little weak in the knees. But it’s probably just the cholesterol talking.

Hope to see you on Saturday. Please let me know if you are coming so I can make sure to bring enough score sheets! Cheers.

Pizza burrito you say? I know exactly where that place is, I’ll have to stop in when I’m home next.

And if you are going to be in Pearl River, you might as well drive over to Spring Valley and check out Tropical Hut. Call ahead and order sisig. Or even a couple pounds of lechon!
