Deanna Questions Breakfast

May 23, 2019

Wow! These posts are getting later and later all the time. I swear I’m not checked out. Today I just had to get a diagnostic MRI. Please tell my mother everything is fine. The body is just getting old, and there are some parts the doctors can’t see, even with their modern tools.

So, that’s my excuse. But I also haven’t been thinking too much about food for the past couple of days. I know. The horror. And as I was struggling with what to write about today, a fortuitous note popped up on my Facebook feed.

Deanna Fox, who writes about food professionally (locally for the Times Union, and nationally for others), and who owns the Albany Cooking School in Different Drummers Kitchen, posed a question. Actually several questions. And since I can’t respond to even a simple question with just a few words, I thought it might be fun to chronicle my thoughts on the blog.

Because as it turns out, I do indeed have a lot of thoughts on breakfast.

Do you eat it everyday?

This one is easy. Hells to the yeah. Personally, I think lunch is the most important meal of the day. I’m not falling for the standard line on breakfast. Do you know when breakfast was the most important meal of the day? When people were toiling in the fields for hours and hours on end, or doing some other kind of hard physical labor. Today, one doesn’t need that much energy to sit in front of a computer, and virtually move documents around.

Still, when I wake up, I want to get that metabolism moving! So even if I’m not feeling especially hungry, I make sure to eat at least a little something.

What’s your favorite thing for breakfast? (Eat at home, on the road, at your desk, etc?)

For a second, I thought this was going to be harder than it really is. Because my favorite thing to eat for breakfast is hash and eggs. Now, I don’t know if that’s cheating, because I’m not specifying a specific type of hash. If I had to choose, I would probably go with duck confit hash. But really, any super fatty and flavorful meat, when cooked on a griddle with potatoes and onions, until everything comes together in a crispy and savory mass is what I want all the time. Of course, I also want it topped with a perfectly poached egg or two. Maybe some sour cream and green onions. I’m happy to make it at home, but getting it at a restaurant is a special treat.

Of course, I don’t eat this often. Realistically, I probably only have it a few times per year. It’s terrible for you, and I might want to take a nap after a plate of the stuff. So that doesn’t usually fit into the flow of my days. But without a doubt it’s my favorite thing to eat for breakfast.

Got a favorite spot in the #518 to enjoy the first meal of the day?

It used to be Dewey’s Diner. Man, I loved that place. Dan’s Place Two has a lot of charm, and they do some great work on that flat top grill. But if I had to choose someplace to go for breakfast right now, it would be Eggy’s. For those who don’t know, it’s the food truck off Broadway in the Warehouse District. Eggy makes the finest bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich I’ve had here in the region. On a beautiful day, you can enjoy it outside. It’s cheap, and the place is full of interesting characters, including Eggy himself.

Are you a second breakfast/elevensies kind of person? If so, what’s your go-to for that meal?

Well, I try not to be. But I also tend to eat a small breakfast when left to my own devices. And in general that first meal leans towards the savory. So if I’m peckish a little later on, I’ll eat a little greek yogurt with some granola on top.

I’m not sure if these were the answers Deanna was looking for, but I can live with them. How about you? What are your further thoughts on breakfast?
