To Be Continued…

July 23, 2019

Well, we’re in the thick of it. The truck finally pulls out tomorrow.

The car is almost fixed.
The roof repairs are underway.
A new garage door will be coming soon.
And hopefully we’ll find someone to mow the lawn.
It even looks like we’ve got takers for most of our old stuff.
Did I tell you that a reader came and took away the chicken carcasses?

Now we just need someone to buy the house.

“Need” is a big word. Maybe we just keep a house in Albany. There are people who do the same thing in Manhattan but with apartments, when the rent is so cheap they can’t afford to walk away. Hey, maybe I’ll become one of those ne’er-do-well out-of-state landlords I’ve heard so much about. Perhaps the Casa del Fussy could become an Air BNB? Sadly, neither of those options play well to my core strengths.

This past Saturday, I was invited to attend one of Field Notes five course planted dinners, and someone asked me what I would be doing in Ann Arbor. My answer was simple, if perhaps a little unexpected.

I haven’t the faintest idea.

But that was the case when I moved to Albany as well. This blog arose out of the desire to help improve the culinary culture in the region. There are some people who think I’ve done that. There are others who don’t. I’m just happy to have played a role in supporting those folks like Joan and Kyle who have been doing great things in the Capital Region.

But as one reader pointed out, over the years the blog has become something more than that. The FLB is also a chronicle of my adventures with food.

Here’s the good news for those of you enjoy the content you’ve come to find here almost every day for the past ten years. The FLB will continue. And, I’m going to try and keep including local content for as long as humanly possible.

How? Well, Emily L has already filed a new guest post. Plus I heard from another member of the community recently who plans to pen a post. There have even been volunteers to lead Fussy Little Tours in my absence. And there is one last final thing that I need to get off my chest once I have the time to do the subject justice. That promises to be juicy.

Although when there’s good news, there is often bad news too.

The FLB is taking a vacation. It’s been ten years since the last one. And back then, when the blog was young, that break in continuity resulted in a readership loss that took months to overcome. Now that the blog is more mature, it can afford to take things a little bit slower. Especially since its mission is now fundamentally different than when we started.

You may have already noticed a more relaxed posting schedule. Today is the last post for a little while. On Wednesday, I have to drive a big honking truck to Buffalo. And on Thursday, that truck is going the rest of the way to Michigan. I’ll need to be rested. I’ll need to get some sleep. Twenty feet of steel, packed with all our remaining worldly possessions, traveling at 65 miles per hour is no joke. But I’m looking forward to the adventure.

When life hands you the opportunity to drive a truck, drive that truck.

I have no idea what opportunities I will find when we arrive in Ann Arbor. People love it there, but people also love Chinese take-out. As much as I’m looking forward to exploring my new town, I’m even more excited about learning about the region as a whole. In the age of the internet are there still hidden gems off the beaten path? If there are, I suspect the midwest might be the place to find them.

Good, bad, or indifferent, I’ll let you know. But for now, it’s so long. It’s been good to know you. And since, I can’t leave without a song, here’s a version of the classic penned by Woody Guthrie. He had a machine that killed fascists… with song.

We need more of this and maybe a little less EDM.

A new adventure! I started reading a couple years ago when we moved up here, and your presence will be missed, even though I’ve only met you virtually. I hope we hear about your next steps on here! And do me a solid and visit some frozen custard spots in Ann Arbor. Mmm…
