Dos de Mayo
Tonight is the beer and game dinner at the City Beer Hall. I’m quite excited. Mrs. Fussy will not be coming with me so there will be nobody to stop me from taking pictures of my food in public.
She hates when I do that.
With any luck a few of them will come out and I can share those with you tomorrow. But even if the pictures fail, I promise to take notes and give you some highlights of the experience.
Saturday is the Kentucky Derby and Sunday is Cinco de Mayo. So while it may be a little unorthodox to read about booze on a Thursday morning, you’ll either have to do it now, or bookmark this page and come back to it later. But nothing is going to stop me from writing about tequila. Not even the derby.
AskTP – Happy Birthday
Four years ago today was the very first post on the FLB. I’m not sure if that makes it the blog’s birthday or its blogiversary. I suppose it doesn’t really matter. I spent a fair bit of time ruminating on the event yesterday.
Today, there is work to be done. Because it’s Wednesday. And two Wednesdays ago was the last Ask the Profussor. That means today is Ask the Profussor.
Questions keep on coming. And that’s awesome. Keep them coming. Because I love to answer them. Any and every question that gets asked in the comments–as long as they use proper punctuation–will eventually get answered. A few will get answered immediately, fewer will receive a full dedicated post with the answer, but most will get rounded up and included in this regular feature.
Also, I should note that the introduction to each question links to the mystery link of the day. So if you are new here and are confused as to why all the links are sending you to the same page, there’s your answer.
Now without further ado, on to the questions:

Almost Four
Tomorrow the FUSSYlittleBLOG turns four. Man, that snuck up on me. In the past I’ve commemorated the day by hanging out on the deck at Sutter’s. But that’s not going to happen this year.
Tomorrow Mrs. Fussy is going out to dinner, so I’m at home with the kids. I’ll probably make them something they love, so I can enjoy something they hate. That’s always fun. However, I won’t be able to sneak out for blogiversary beers.
Tomorrow I won’t even be able to write about the birthday because this Wednesday is scheduled to be the next Ask the Profussor. And just last night I finally received the question I’ve been waiting on for days. Thank you, Danielle. I should buy you a slice of pizza.
Normally, I don’t believe in commemorating birthdays early. But today I’ll make an exception.
Eventful Weekends
I’m still out of my rhythm. Last night when I should have been writing this post I picked up a guitar and started noodling around instead of writing. Mostly that was inspired by the campfire at Silly Goose Farm this past weekend. So that means today’s missive will not benefit from Mrs. Fussy’s oversight.
Some of you may have figured that out already based on the placement of the commas. I like to use a lot of them, and my dear wife makes me look like a more polished writer by taking most of them out.
Although I may be overcompensating and subconsciously avoiding commas entirely. The brain is really a remarkable thing.
There were other notable happenings this weekend besides the birthday party on the farm. And there are some great things coming up this week. I’m also realizing that there was one notable event which was totally absent from yesterday’s round up of press releases.
Second Photo Friday
Well, it’s been two months since the last time I tried this crazy kind of post. This time I think I’m going to try harder to use fewer words.
First, let me say, “Thank you.”
The polls for the Times Union’s Best of the Capital Region survey closed yesterday. Thanks to those who voted for the full slate, thanks for those who passed the FUSSYlittleBALLOT around to friends on Facebook, Twitter, email or word of mouth, and an extra special thanks to those who took up arms and blogged about the effort.
There were a few things I did better this year than in the past. There were also some lapses. To be perfectly honest, I don’t have as much heart for the scheme as I did when Subway was on the top of the list.
In addition to the last minute push for the poll, yesterday was also Dining Out For Life and its close marks the end of my busy stretch of interviewing, transcribing interviews, and writing stories that actually required some preparation and research.
Now I’m tired. So I’m going to share some food pictures from the last two months. It’s a highlight reel of things I’ve never posted in any form. These are pictures that got trapped in the jail of my camera. And this is the jail break.
Grocery Confession Number One
First, if it’s before noon on Thursday and if you haven’t voted in the Times Union Best of the Capital Region poll, please click here to get the slate of FLB-endorsed local restaurants, and help us elevate some of our truly great but lesser known establishments.
Seriously. Today’s post can wait. And voting shouldn’t take you much more than five minutes. You are even allowed to skip all the categories that require you to write in an answer. So don’t worry if you are reading this on your phone. It will still be easy.
No excuses.
I don’t make excuses. I just confess my sins. It’s good for the soul, plus it’s a great way of expunging guilt. And I’ve got a lot of guilt. Amazingly, it seems to have been a while since I’ve written one of these confession posts. But today I’ve got a doozy. It’s about meat.
DOFL: Hattie’s Restaurant & Chicken Shack
Well, Dining Out For Life is already tomorrow. Man, where did the time go? I’ve been spending the last couple of weeks visiting a small handful of participating restaurants around the region and talking with some of the people behind the scenes. Hopefully it’s been interesting for you. It’s been absolutely fascinating for me.
My plan for tomorrow is to have lunch at Mingle with Little Miss Fussy (mental note: call ahead to make sure there’s actually room for two) and then dinner at City Beer Hall with All Over Albany. It will be a lot of food, but it’s for a good cause.
Today I should really probably be reminding you all to check out the FUSSYlittleBALLOT 4.0 and vote in the TU’s online poll that closes at noon tomorrow. TOMORROW! But instead I’m going to share the juicy bits of my conversation with the owner of a Saratoga institution that is also participating in the AIDS Council of Northeastern New York’s event tomorrow.
First, I’ll offer a confession. In the six years I’ve lived in the region, I have never been to Hattie’s.
