The Weekly

April 8, 2015

Today’s a big day. But before we go into that, here’s a pop quiz. Write your answers down on a scrap of paper if you can. Yes, I really want you to play along.

Quickly, without consulting the Internet, name five notable old-school Albany institutions that are still around today. This is an old town, so old-school means older than the 1980s. And that’s city of Albany, and not Albany County or Capital Region.

Got ’em? Okay, now hold on to that list. Let’s compare.

First, I would like to tell you what has me so excited. Today is the launch of The Weekly Yelp in Albany. And in this case I mean Albany, as in the greater Capital Region.

There are a lot of exciting things that I get to do in this new job, but writing The Weekly Yelp is certainly at the top of that list. We had an amazing party at Slidin’ Dirty last week, and the pictures from that will also be posted later today, but in my heart of hearts I’m not an event planner. I’m working with The Enchanted City to really blow out the food part of this fantastical street festival in the fall, but marketing and promotion often require meetings. Who really enjoys meetings?

Writing, I really dig writing. And more than that, I really love sharing great places that are off the radar for most people, or reminding folks about beloved businesses that for some reason are no longer top of mind.

Like Rolf’s Pork Store.
The Orchard Tavern is up there.
When’s the last time you went bowling at the Playdium?

And that’s what The Weekly Yelp is going to do. Plus it’s going to be sent to a staggering number of people every single week. Everyone who has signed up for a Yelp account in the area should start finding the The Weekly in their email inboxes starting today.

It’s not spam. It’s not full of ads. In fact there isn’t a single ad. There is one small sponsorship spot that’s made available for marketing trades. The Weekly Yelp is simply a curated list of notable places within the region, and three interesting events that will take place over the next few days.

This week’s issue hits on Albany’s old-school institutions. So those are my top five picks. I’m curious how they compare with your list. Next week, we’re going new school. And don’t worry, if you haven’t signed up to get the newsletter, you can always just pop over to Yelp and see it there.

Hope you enjoy them, they’re a lot of fun to put together.

I agree with your picking Rolfs. I was there last week and the place smelled like heaven. They were smoking their Easter hams. Dreamy!!!

I’m feeling concerned that Bob & Ron’s won’t be with us much more- the trademark sign is long overdue for an overhaul- deferred maintenance seems as if they don’t want to put in the money before selling.

I am forever a fan of Jack’s Oyster House. The old school, refined dining room makes me feel like I should finish off dinner with a brandy and cigar. The steak Dianne (rare) has always been a favorite of mine, and I literally clean my plate. The homemade blue cheese dressing. . . just thinking about it makes me LOVE salad again. And the cheesecake. The cheesecake. The cheesecake. Lord have mercy – The CHEESECAKE. Lonely nights dreaming of that cheesecake, had set the bar for our very own . . . oh wait, that’s still a secret.
